Television and radio have been around
quite a bit longer than the internet.
However, both are still very effective forms of media technology. Television is arguably the second most
effective media tool available next to the internet. Where both television and the radio are able
to extend information and entertainment to their respective audiences,
television has the benefit of being both seen and heard. This combination of senses leaves a greater
impression on the viewer and therefore, messages are more likely to be
remembered than with listening alone.
Television
is used for several reasons. Marketing
teams know the value of television and use it frequently, as is obvious by the
number of commercials interrupting your favorite shows. On the other hand, television for many people
is still the preferred media tool to receive information on the news and
weather. Of course, entertainment is
also an enormous part of television as well.
With shows ranging from cartoons to sitcoms to sports and news, there is
something for everyone on the tube.
Radio
too, has the ability to entertain us.
This media technology also provides us with things like the news,
weather, traffic reports, and commercials.
However, it is for the ears only.
Since information utilizes only the sense of hearing, marketers often
use repetition to help their messages stick with the audience. The radio does have the advantage over
television when it comes to mobility. We
are not a stationary people. We are
constantly on the move. In this case,
the radio has an advantage over television in that we can listen on the
go. We do not have to sit in the same
place to watch. We can tune in wherever
we are and wherever we go.
